The task was to design a modern BI dashboard interface that helps users visualize and analyze large datasets intuitively and efficiently.

The challenge centered around balancing advanced analytical functionality with usability for less technical users working with business-critical information.

I started by analyzing existing BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, and Qlik Sense to better understand common interaction patterns, dashboard structures, and usability challenges.

The review revealed recurring pain points:

• visually overwhelming interfaces

• inflexible dashboards

• complex onboarding

• difficult data imports

To ground the concept in real user needs, I conducted short exploratory interviews focused on how people currently experience BI platforms in their day-to-day work.

Three themes appeared:

04 - Defining the User

The concept focused primarily on managers with growing responsibility for data-driven decision making, but limited experience with advanced BI systems.

The persona “Malin” became a guiding reference throughout the design process, helping prioritize clarity, dashboard flexibility, and actionable insights.

05 - Design Priorities

1. Reduce visual overwhelm

Simplify hierarchy and prioritize the most important KPIs.

2. Make customization approachable

Allow users to rearrange and edit dashboards without technical friction.

3. Support quick decision making

Use color-coded indicators and clear visual patterns.

4. Simplify data import

Reduce barriers around integrating external datasets.

06 -Wireframes & Iteration

Low-fidelity sketches were used to rapidly explore dashboard structures, editing workflows, and interaction patterns before moving into higher-fidelity concepts.

The iterations focused on:

• widget modularity

• graph editing

• dashboard hierarchy

• data import workflows

07 - Final Concept

The final concept focused on clarity, flexibility, and fast access to actionable insights through a modular dashboard experience.
